About the Nedbank
Nedbank’s history dates back to the early 19th century with the establishment of the Bank of Good Hope Cape in 1831. In 1971, the Nederlandsche Bank voor Zuid-Afrika (NBZA) changed its name to Nedbank. Two years later, in 1973, the Nedbank Group was formed from the merger of Syfrets South Africa, Union Acceptances, and Nedbank.

The following year, the Nedbank Group changed its name to Nedcor.
Significant changes occurred in the 2000s. In 2003, a new Nedcor Group was formed, combining Nedcor, BoE, Nedcor Investment Bank (NIB), and Cape of Good Hope Bank. Structural and strategic changes were implemented in 2004 to restore the group’s performance.
In 2010, Nedbank became the first African bank to achieve carbon neutrality and in 2011, launched South Africa’s first green index, the Nedbank Green Index. In 2019, Nedbank became the first commercial bank in South Africa to list a green bond on the JSE. The following year, in 2020, the bank launched the Avo super app.
